M51 — The Whirlpool Galaxy

The Whirlpool Galaxy is one of the most magnificent and photogenic spiral galaxies in the sky. It was the first galaxy in which a spiral structure was identified — by Lord Rosse in 1845 using his 72-inch telescope at Birr Castle in Ireland.
