M43 — De Mairan's Nebula

M43 is a small comma-shaped emission nebula that forms part of the greater Orion Nebula complex, separated from M42 by a dark dust lane. It was independently discovered by the French geophysicist Jean-Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan around 1731
